One idea that I've been considering is periodic brown bag lunches at Kids' World at Alamdea Park. This could be a fun opportunity for mentors and mentees to bring their own picnic lunches and hang out with others in the program.

I think picnics sound nice. How about a picnic on the waterfront in Ventura?--Beth

Brown bag idea would be fun, and perhaps we could do a "snack swap" as well.

I would love to do some hikes with other mentors/mentees-- learn about some new trails.

My student has moved to Lompoc, a city I don't know. Does anyone know of any summer activities there?

To EllenB - My mentee and I have talked about hiking and would love to join you! I know several good trails, and would love to learn new ones. Lisa - can we work with you to coordinate this? I can help select sites and can lead the hikes, if you can help us announce it via email? If people show interest, maybe we could make it a regular (or periodic) activity for the summer??

Jill, I would LOVE for you to lead some hikes for us during the summer. That sounds like a fun activity! I will email you to get further details about your thoughts on this. :-) Keep contributing your ideas to the blog, Mentors! See how fun and beneficial blogging can be! :-) I am looking forward to seeing what other ideas are out there!

Unfortunately, I'm going to be traveling for 6 weeks or so this summer and will miss out on a lot of activities, but I'm trying to get my mentee some summer camp scholarships.

Reading these comments motivates me to fill out the forms so that I can see my mentee over the summer. My hesitation is that I don't speak Spanish so I don't know how to communicate with her aunt. I'm sure we can figure it out though! I like the hiking idea and picnic's at the beach :)

How about a neighborhood clean up activity this summer? Pick an area, get the volunteers, green bags and go for it.

Katya, I hear you on the language barrier. Most of the forms should be available in Spanish if you call the specific camp or organization, they should be able to get those to you. :-) Community Service is a great idea, Arno! :-) You guys are great at coming up with activities! Keep 'em coming!!

My mentee likes to draw cartoon characters- and is really into comics and anime. Last summer the SB Library had a free anime series for the teens (movie nights)- maybe we can support this happening again - and maybe get some type of workshop together for drawing/art for mentees and mentors afterwards?

How about a pool party in Carpinteria? I would love to host it and do the BBQ, maybe others could bring side dishes. Adults can swim with the kids or sit under the palapa, relax and share ideas. My son and daughter are certified life guards and will be happy to help out, so that the kids are safe. I'm out most of June, but most of July and August are open. Let me know if anyone is interested. Can be big or small.

Ed -

How generous of you and what a great idea! I'm wondering about doing some of the typical Santa Barbara things that because we live here, we never do. An example would be renting those large bikes from Wheel Fun Rentals and all riding around and then having a picnic. I bet we could get Wheel Fun Rentals to donate or at least give us a good discount!

Maybe a BBQ at the beach, although I do like the idea of a pool party as well. Perhaps we could do both. July and August would be better months for me.

How about a day when a group of mentors and mentees take a bus to L.A. for a baseball game?

Perhaps we can add a spot on this blog where people can put down activities that they have done with their mentees so the rest of us can get ideas. My mentee seems to think that I am an ATM machine, I would love to hear ideas like free sundays at the art museum
